Mom Wants A Diabetes Cure

I Just Want To Gather The World Into One Room......

And EDUCATE them!!

At the front of the row, I would like to place the checkout girl from the supermarket who looked at me like I was a single brain celled organism as well as another girl who was trying to convince me that ketones are OK for most people, but not for diabetics.

Excuse me checkout girl, but the next time you look at me like I'm the biggest idiot on Earth and inform me that sugar free Peeps are for diabetics when I ask you what is the point of the Peeps being sugar free, I'm going to run you across the conveyer belt and scan you.

For your information....and what I didn't have time to tell you because I didn't want to hold up the line, is that 3 sugar free Peeps have 23 carbohydrates. Do you know what that means? It means it'll raise a PWD's glucose level....and that is not a good thing unless they have the insulin to cover it. And guess what...simple sugar does the same thing. So again, I ask you...What is the point of sugar free Peeps?

To the girl who was trying to explain to me that ketones are a good thing to have because it means you're losing weight: Ketones are not a good thing to have.

When you tell me that it's OK for most people to have them, but not for diabetics, I just want you to know that it isn't OK for ANYONE to have ketones, and by the way, the Atkins diet should be outlawed. I know you were on it, and I appreciate you telling me what the book says, but you can lose weight on the Anorexia diet too. Diabetics are more prone to get ketones because of their compromised endocrine system. Thanks.

  • If only it were that easy! Preach on Shannon!

  • I would let the checkout girl go if she hadn't copped an attitude with me and acted like Brendon was being careless for having sugar in his diet. I didn't add that part to the post.

  • OMG I LOVE YOU SHANNON!!!!!

    You are awesome!

BTW - a friend bought me sugar free peeps for easter. My wife said, "what's the point?" LOL

  • Ugh. Blogger lost my original comment, so here it goes again.

    1) Totally agree with the Peeps. I took Organic Chemistry in high school and sometimes I think it causes me more frustration than just about anything else because I know that sugar and carbohydrates are the same thing, just one has a more complicated molecular structure... but it's the same chemicals!

    2) Actually people can get ketones in very, very small amounts and have it be okay.

In December 2006, a teen asked on Diabetes Teen Talk about whether or not ketones were produced when you were losing weight but were still taking insulin (as opposed to burning fat without insulin, which we all know is bad).

I didn't know the answer, so I asked Gary Scheiner (the OC's end-all-be-all of knowledge, it seems).

    This is his answer:

"That's a subject that confuses a lot of people. Here goes:

    -----------------
Actually, the body burns some fat all the time, and a small amount of ketones (acid waste products) are created when fat is burned for energy. However, those ketones don't tend to build up and "pollute" the bloodstream because the presence of insulin ensures that:
    1. Some glucose is being burned as well, thus reducing the amount of fat being burned.
    2. When glucose is burned for energy, some of the ketones can be broken down as well (they sort of jump into the fire together)
    3. If the blood sugar is not very high, we won't get dehydrated. We need fluids to help neutralize and buffer the ketones that are produced.

Of course, without any insulin in the body, ketones are produced in large amounts, they don't get broken down, and the body cannot handle them well. The result is usually DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis).

On the subject of weight loss, people with type-1 diabetes can lose weight by exercising and eating less, but it will be necessary to lower (but not eliminate) insulin doses."

    Hope this helps!

  • Way to go, Shannon! You should teach a class on this. Let us know the time & place & we'll all send people to it. Oh, and make them pay for the class, too. Then the money could go toward finding a cure. How 'bout it?

  • Shannon -
    YOU ROCK.
Screw Sugar-free Peeps and Screw Airhead Checkout Chick -no pun intended.
You spoke up and I'm all for that!

  • RAWK ON GIRL! :)

P.S. Can I send some of my in laws to your class??

  • I believe its people like that which invented the need for heavy metal music.

  • I've got a few to include in your class! Especially the grocer who told me that diabetics can eat all the fruit they want because it is natural sugars that doesn't affect the blood sugar.
P.S. Are the sugar-free Peeps any good?

  • Carmen,
I don't know if they're good. It's my little protest against sugar free Peeps. I think I may start a rally, LOL. Down with the SF Peeps!

  • Allison,

Thanks for the mini college course, but this was really a tongue in cheek rant. Thanks though :)

By Blogger Shannon, at 3/28/2008 9:12 AM

  • Shannon,

Well, I wasn't sure and I honestly just copied and pasted his email, so it wasn't like a huge amount of work. You'd be surprised, though, how often I hear similar things about whether or not non-diabetics get ketones and whatever, so I thought, well, maybe this will help someone who is reading the comments. :-)

  • Anon,

Thanks for capitalizing LOW CARB. I don't think I would've noticed it if you hadn't done that. I'm not quite sure what you're getting at with your comment. Do you think people buy sugar free items because they're LOW CARB??

BTW, SUGAR FREE PEEPS AREN'T LOW CARB. THEY ARE 23 CARBS FOR ONE SERVING.

By Blogger Shannon, at 3/28/2008 12:09 PM

  • "Maybe when Brendon gets past 18 years old he will decide that LOW CARB is the way he wants to go."

    Or maybe he won't.

By Blogger Brett, at 3/28/2008 2:18 PM

  • Thanks, Brett :)

  • Asshats abound! Maybe when Brendan is 18 he'll decide to kick Anon's ass after a few years on a dedicated workout that I gave him ;).

Shannon the key to getting them to shut up is do alot of bicep curls then when they point out something is LOW CARB because it's SUGAR FREE put them in a headlock and shove their face on the nutritional label pointing out that it isn't in fact LOW CARB.

And perhaps Anon should take a look at the amount of carbs a PWD requires when athetlically active and realize that a LOW CARB diet would in fact KILL an athletic PWD

  • LMAO, Ed. Maybe Anon is the same asshat as your Anon who I see commenting on your blog from time to time.

  • Ah. Thanks for the clarification. I still believe Atkins should be banned though. It's not a healthy way to lose weight or live even for people with diabetes.

I will definitely discourage my son from a low carb diet when he turns 18.

By Blogger Shannon, at 3/28/2008 5:16 PM

  • Yes, you go girl!
Sorry I'm delayed. I turned the computer OFF for a couple of days.

And on one of those days I took Daniel to get blood taken for his cholesterol test. I'm scared to see the results. I think he ate 4 deviled eggs (that's 8 halves!) the night before the test. And he loves cheese & meat. He's screwed.

By Blogger Naomi, at 3/28/2008 7:12 PM

  • I was gone for 8 days, so I'm way behind.
I seriously can't understand why somebody would get all up in your business when clearly your whole blog has to do with DIABETES (well, mostly the whole thing, you do funny sarcastic shit in there too, which I lurve you for).
I ton of people on hubby's side of the family, and my SIL are diabetics. They have analyzed sugar from every possible angle.

But, for real, SUGAR FREE PEEPS? Stop the madness! :)

FYI: my favorite Easter basket item, back in the day....mmmm, Peeps.
